I did not plan to change anything. That is usually how it goes.
It was not the weather, not really, not down here. It was the AC. Weeks of going from ninety-five degrees outside to sixty-eight inside and back again, all day, every day, and one morning my skin just gave up the act. Tighter. A little dull around the edges. The kind of dryness that does not show up as flaking, it just shows up as your face looking tired even when you are not.
So I did what I always do when something stops working. I went back to basics and rebuilt from there.
The routine, as it actually happens now
Cleanse first, always. Then toner, because I learned the hard way that skipping it makes everything after it work harder than it needs to.
Then ten minutes under my LED mask on red light. I used to think this step was optional, something to squeeze in if I had time. I do not think that anymore. It has become the part of the routine I actually look forward to, the ten minutes where I am not doing anything else, just sitting there while it works. If you have been curious about one of these, this is the one I use.
After that, the Glow Recipe Watermelon Niacinamide Dew Drops go on while my skin is still a little damp. This is the product I did not expect to become a staple. It is not dramatic. It just quietly does its job, and I notice when I skip it.
Then tretinoin. Mine is prescription strength, and I want to be upfront about that.
What works for my skin is not a universal recommendation. Tretinoin is prescription strength, and building up frequency matters more than people tell you. Please talk to your dermatologist about what is right for your skin specifically before adding a retinoid into your own routine.
Last is the Paula's Choice RESIST Barrier Repair Moisturizer, which exists entirely to undo whatever the tretinoin just did to my barrier. It is not glamorous. It is necessary.
Why I am telling you this now
I almost did not write this one. It felt too small, too much like "here is my skincare," which is not usually what I want to give you. But then I realized the actual story is not the routine. It is the fact that I changed it at all, that I paid attention to what my skin was asking for instead of running the same five products on autopilot because that is what worked in June.
That is the part I want you to take from this, more than the products themselves. Listen to what your skin is telling you before you are frustrated by it.
