Not all skincare ingredients are created equal — and some of the most heavily marketed ones do very little. These are the ones with genuine evidence, personal results and a place in my routine.

🧴
Retinol
Cell turnover · Collagen · Fine lines
The gold standard of anti-ageing skincare. Retinol accelerates cell renewal, stimulates collagen production and is one of the few ingredients with decades of clinical proof behind it.
After 35, cell turnover slows to roughly half its rate at 25 — retinol directly addresses this decline and is the reason results are so visible within a few months of consistent use.
Start with 0.025% and use only at night. Always follow with SPF in the morning. Introduce slowly — two nights per week — to avoid irritation.

Vitamin C
Brightening · Antioxidant · Even tone
Your morning glow starts here. Vitamin C neutralises free radicals, fades dark spots and gives skin that luminosity no highlighter can fake.
Post-35 hyperpigmentation worsens as oestrogen declines — Vitamin C is the ingredient most directly proven to address it, making it more valuable now than it was at 25.
Apply before SPF every morning. Look for L-ascorbic acid at 10–20% concentration. Store in a dark bottle to prevent oxidation.

Hyaluronic Acid
Deep hydration · Plumping · Barrier support
As oestrogen levels shift, skin loses moisture faster. Hyaluronic acid holds 1,000x its weight in water, delivering deep hydration that plumps fine lines from the inside out.
Oestrogen directly regulates skin hydration — as it declines after 35, the skin's ability to retain moisture drops measurably. Hyaluronic acid compensates for exactly this loss.
Apply to damp skin for maximum absorption. Layer under your moisturiser while skin is still slightly wet from toner or mist.

🛡️
Niacinamide
Pores · Redness · Barrier repair
The multi-tasker your skin has been waiting for. Niacinamide minimises pores, calms redness, regulates oil and rebuilds the skin barrier — all without irritation.
Hormonal fluctuations after 35 can trigger new sensitivities and barrier breakdown that were never issues at 25. Niacinamide addresses all three simultaneously.
Works at any time of day and layers beautifully with almost everything. Start at 5% and work up to 10% for maximum benefit.

Peptides
Firmness · Collagen · Elasticity
Think of peptides as your skin's personal trainers — they signal to your skin to produce more collagen and elastin, improving firmness over time.
Collagen production drops approximately 1% per year after 25 — by 35 you have already lost around 10%. Peptides are the most direct topical signal you can send your skin to start rebuilding.
Perfect for daytime use. Look for matrixyl, argireline or copper peptides. Pair with a good SPF to protect the collagen you are building.

SPF 50
Protection · Prevention · Anti-ageing
The single most effective anti-ageing product you will ever own. Up to 80% of visible ageing is caused by UV exposure. Non-negotiable — rain, shine, indoors, outdoors.
If you have not been consistent with SPF before 35, starting now still matters more than any other single change you can make. Every day you protect your skin counts.
Apply as the final step of your morning routine. Look for broad-spectrum protection. Reapply every 2 hours if outdoors.
