LED vs Microcurrent after 35
which one is actually worth it

Both cost real money. Both promise younger-looking skin. Here is the honest version of which one you actually need first.

I get the same question more than almost any other. Which one do I buy — the LED mask, or the microcurrent thing everyone is talking about? And I understand the hesitation. Both have a thousand glowing reviews, and a thousand people quietly saying they did nothing. So here is the honest version. They are not the same tool, they do not do the same job, and the question is not which one wins. It is which one you actually need first.

LED and microcurrent solve two different problems. One works on the surface and health of your skin. The other works on the muscle underneath. In a single line: LED is for your skin. Microcurrent is for your face shape.

Most people who love their results end up using both. But you rarely need to buy both at once. Which one you start with comes down to one thing — what bothers you when you look in the mirror.

Already know microcurrent is your lane? The one I would start a friend on is the NuFACE Mini+ — more on why below.

01
The skin one

What LED light therapy
actually does

LED therapy is light — specific wavelengths of it — sitting against your skin. No current, no muscle work, nothing you feel beyond a little warmth. The red and near-infrared wavelengths reach the deeper layer of your skin and nudge it to do the repair work it gets slower at over time. Making collagen. Calming inflammation. Recovering from the daily wear of sun, stress and life.

Think of LED as maintenance and repair — the quiet, cumulative one. You will not look in the mirror after one session and gasp. What you might notice, weeks in, is subtler: skin that looks calmer, more even, a little less tired. Not dramatic. Steady.

I wrote a full, honest account of using one in my iRestore LED mask review — including the part where I almost gave up before it started working.

LED is for you if

Your main concern is skin quality — tone, texture, redness, dullness, that general "my skin looks tired" feeling — and you have the patience for something that rewards consistency over instant gratification.

The face-shape one

What microcurrent
actually does

Microcurrent is a different thing entirely. It sends a tiny, gentle electrical current — so low you mostly cannot feel it — through the skin to the muscles underneath. Closer to exercise than skincare, really. It works the facial muscles, and the visible effect is lift: cheekbones a touch more defined, a jawline that looks firmer, brows that sit a fraction higher.

The honest part

The lift is real, but it is not permanent — it is cumulative, like any kind of toning. Skip a few weeks and it fades. It also needs a conductive gel every single time, so there is a small ongoing cost. And it only works if you actually keep up with it. That is the bit the glossy ads leave out.

I use a microcurrent device myself — not the one I am about to recommend, but the technology is the same across the good brands. Here is what I would tell a friend. On the mornings I use it before something that matters, my face looks more awake, more sculpted. The effect is real. It is also a small, regular commitment, not a one-time fix.

Microcurrent is for you if

What bothers you is structure — softening along the jaw, cheeks that have lost a little definition, a face that looks like it is drifting downward — and you will genuinely keep up a five-minute habit a few times a week.

Neither column is the winner. They are answering different questions about your face. If the microcurrent column is the one describing your mirror, the NuFACE Mini+ is where I would begin.

"There is no prize for buying both on day one. Start with the one that answers what you actually see in the mirror — add the other later, if you ever want to."

— Anjie, Style & Soul 35+

So which do I actually start with?

Stand in good light and look at what is actually bothering you. If the honest answer is my skin — it looks tired, uneven, red, dull — start with LED. If the honest answer is my face shape — things feel softer, less defined, like everything is settling a little lower — start with microcurrent.

Cannot decide? I would lean LED first, for one practical reason. It asks less of you. You sit still and let it work. Microcurrent rewards discipline, and there is no point spending the money if the device is going to live in a drawer by March.

Microcurrent · Beginner pick
NuFACE Mini+ — the one I would start a friend on
✓ 3 intensity levels ✓ 5-minute sessions ✓ Gentler price than the Trinity+

If you are just starting out, I would point you here over the bigger, pricier models. It is the brand's petite, beginner version — the same core microcurrent technology as their flagship, in a smaller, less intimidating tool.

Honest take

"It does less than the top-tier device, yes. But for a first microcurrent tool, less and you will actually use it beats more and it intimidates you into a drawer."

Check the current price on Amazon → ✦ Prices move a lot and go on sale often — I would check the live price rather than trust any number, and wait for a sale if you are not in a hurry.

"The device is the easy part. The results come from showing up — a few quiet minutes, a few times a week. That part is free."
