What to Wear When You Hate
How Workout Clothes Fit After 40

You are not imagining it. Your body has changed, and most activewear was not designed with that in mind. These are the six lululemon pieces that finally made me feel good in the studio — not just covered.

There is a particular kind of dressing-room frustration that most women over 40 know well. You pick up something that looks fine on the hanger, it fits in the sense that it goes on, and then you spend the entire class pulling it down, tugging it up, or wishing you had worn something else. Nothing is actually wrong. And yet nothing feels right either.

I went through a long phase of just wearing whatever was comfortable and trying not to think about it. The problem was that how you feel in what you are wearing affects how you move, and how you move affects how well you train. When your clothes are working against you, there is one more thing to manage in a session that already requires concentration.

After a lot of trial and considerable money spent on things that went straight to the back of the wardrobe, I found a handful of lululemon pieces that genuinely work for a body that has changed — not a body I am trying to get back to, but the one I actually have right now.

"The right workout clothes do not make you look like someone else. They make you forget you are wearing anything at all — which is exactly when you can focus on what you are there to do." — Anjie, Style & Soul 35+

What Actually Changes — and What to Look For

After 40, a few things shift in ways that directly affect how activewear fits. The waist softens and sits higher. The hips and thighs carry more volume. And skin has less of the elasticity that once allowed a piece to stretch and spring back without showing every contour. None of this is a problem to solve. It is a fit brief.

Your fit brief after 40

High-rise waistbands with real structure: Not just labelled high-rise — actually engineered to hold. A waistband that rolls is a design failure, not a body failure.

Four-way stretch with recovery: Fabric that moves in every direction and returns to shape. Without recovery, leggings bag at the knee within twenty minutes.

Longer body lengths in tops: A top that hits at the hip covers what most of us want covered without being oversized or shapeless.

Bras with wider straps and a proper back band: As the bust changes, the architectural demands on a sports bra change with it.

Six Pieces That Earned a Permanent Place in My Bag

Each chosen for a specific reason — not because it photographs well, but because it solves a real fit problem for a body over 40.

01
lululemon Align High-Rise Legging
Start here
lululemon · Leggings
Align High-Rise Legging 28"
✓ No compression✓ Nulu fabric✓ Flat waistband

The Nulu fabric has no compression — which sounds like a negative until you realise that compression on a body that has shifted can create exactly the kind of bulge you were trying to avoid. Nulu simply drapes. The wide waistband sits flat without digging. The 28-inch inseam hits at the ankle properly, giving a clean elongating line.

Honest take

"Buy black first, build from there. This is the anchor piece — get the fit right here and everything else follows."

02
lululemon · Leggings
Wunder Train High-Rise Tight 25"
✓ Gentle structure✓ Ribbed texture✓ Higher intensity days

Where the Align is soft and drapey, the Wunder Train has gentle compression and a firmer grip. The one I reach for on days when I want a little more structure — not squeezing, just held. The ribbed texture also means it does not show every movement the way a smooth fabric does.

Honest take

"Different enough from the Align to earn its place. Same high waistband architecture, different fabric feel entirely."

03
lululemon · Tops
Swiftly Tech Long-Sleeve 2.0
✓ Hip-length body✓ Wicks beautifully✓ Never bunches

The body length hits at the hip, not the waist — the single most important thing I look for in a workout top now. It wicks properly, moves without bunching, and the fit through the torso is relaxed without being baggy. I wear it in every neutral it comes in.

Honest take

"The body length is everything. Once you have the right length, you will never go back to a shorter hem."

04
lululemon · Sports Bras
Energy Bra High Support
✓ Wide back band✓ Structured cups✓ Fuller bust friendly

Most sports bras stop at coverage. This one has a wide back band and proper structured cups that account for a fuller bust without the uniboob effect. The straps are wide enough not to cut in. After 40, this is the difference between a session you can focus on and one you spend adjusting.

Honest take

"Naming the uniboob problem directly: this is one of the few sports bras that avoids it while delivering real support."

05
lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag
Cult favourite
lululemon · Accessories
Everywhere Belt Bag 1L
✓ Phone + card + keys✓ Shoulder or waist✓ Sells out fast

Phone, card, keys, lip balm — everything you actually need for a class in one flat bag that goes over the shoulder or around the waist. It is the most practical thing lululemon makes. Every colour sells out. If you see it in your colour, buy it — enable restock notifications on the app so you do not miss it.

Honest take

"The lowest price-per-use item on this list. A handbag does not belong on a reformer."

06
lululemon · Accessories
Find Your Balance Studio Sock
✓ Non-negotiable on reformer✓ Full grip coverage✓ Wash brilliantly

Grip socks are not optional on the reformer — bare feet slide on the carriage and most studios require them. These are worth buying properly rather than picking up the cheap version at the front desk. The grip coverage is thorough, they stay up, and they wash well. Buy two pairs so you always have a clean set ready.

Honest take

"A small thing that makes a real difference to how stable you feel on the machine. Do not skip it."

One Last Thing About the Cost

None of these pieces are inexpensive. lululemon is a considered purchase, and I would never suggest otherwise. What I would say is that I have spent more money over the years buying cheaper activewear that did not fit, wore out quickly, or made me feel bad in it, than I have ever spent on pieces that worked. The Align leggings I own are over two years old and look exactly as they did when I bought them. That is what you are actually paying for.

The Amex Platinum strategy — use it here

If you have an American Express Platinum card, Amex includes a lululemon credit as part of its annual benefits — 5 per quarter, which adds up to 00 a year. The mistake most people make is spending it as soon as it lands on something small. The smarter move is to save it and apply it to a higher-ticket item like the Align leggings or the long-sleeve, where 5 makes a material difference. I plan my quarterly lululemon purchase around this credit. You may want to verify current benefit terms with Amex directly as these can change — but this has made a real difference to how I think about the annual spend.

If you are going to invest in one thing first, make it the leggings. Get the fit right there and build around it. Apply your Amex credit each quarter and the wardrobe builds itself.
