The five lipsticks —
I keep reaching for after 35

There is no faster way to look like you made an effort than the right lipstick. Five seconds at the mirror. The single most efficient grooming step in any morning routine — and the one that transforms an outfit from "thrown together" to "considered."

I am not loyal to one lipstick. I have a small, edited collection — five lipsticks that each do a different job, in different moments, with no overlap. The grown-up everyday nude. The timeless classic. The hydrating luxury. The all-day workhorse. The grown-up red.

Three of them are prestige. One is mid-tier. One is drugstore. The drugstore one is on this list for a reason that has nothing to do with price and everything to do with the specific job nobody else does better.

These are the five lipsticks I keep reaching for, in the order I reach for them.

01
The everyday hero

The grown-up nude —
that almost everyone is wearing

Pillow Talk became famous for a reason. It works on almost everyone, regardless of undertone or age, and it makes you look like the version of yourself you would be on a good day. A matte that is not drying. A nude that is not boring. The first lipstick I pack for any trip and the one I reach for when I cannot decide.

The genius is in the shade — a pinky-rose nude with enough warmth to flatter most skin tones and enough depth to register on camera. The texture is closer to a satin than a true matte, which means it survives the day without that papery edge cheaper mattes develop after an hour.

If you are starting from zero — if you have never invested in a "real" lipstick — this is where I would tell you to start.

The classic

The timeless nude —
that earns its place at every price

Velvet Teddy has been on every makeup artist's recommendation list for the last fifteen years and it is still earning its place. A warm, deep nude with a satin matte finish that flatters almost every skin tone, sits comfortably under brighter colours if you want to layer, and does the heavy lifting for half the price of the prestige brands.

This is the lipstick I keep in my bag when I want something I do not have to think about. Apply without a mirror. Refresh in a coffee shop bathroom. The kind of product where the only decision is reapplying or not.

If Pillow Talk is the pinky-nude, Velvet Teddy is the warmer, slightly deeper sister. Most women who reach 35 with a serious lipstick habit own both. More Beauty >>

03
The luxury

The hydrating cream —
that feels like a treat

There is a category of lipstick that you put on and your lips actually feel better afterwards. Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge is that lipstick. The hydrating cream formula sits closer to a balm than a matte — pigmented, comfortable, no tightness, no drying edge.

This is the lipstick I reach for when my lips are not behaving — winter mornings, after a long flight, the days when matte feels like punishment. The texture is so comfortable you forget you are wearing it, but the colour stays and lasts longer than a balm should reasonably last.

Lancôme has been making lipstick longer than most beauty brands have been around. The packaging is heavy in your hand the way prestige beauty is supposed to feel. The kind of object that earns its place on the bathroom counter as well as in the bag.

04
The workhorse

The all-day wear —
that drugstore beats prestige at

This is the lipstick I wear when I cannot reapply. Long flights. Long dinners. The kind of day where the lipstick has to survive on its own.

Super Stay Matte Ink does what its name promises. It goes on as a liquid, sets to a true matte, and stays. Through coffee, through food, through everything reasonable. The wear is genuinely all-day. The trade-off is that it is drier than the others on this list — not a problem for occasional wear, but not the formula I would reach for daily.

The reason I have included a drugstore lipstick on a list with three prestige brands is simple. On the specific metric of long-wear, the drugstore beats prestige. Nothing in the high-end matte category lasts as reliably as this does.

How to make any lipstick last longer

Prime first. A swipe of concealer over the lips before lipstick gives the colour something to grip — adds two to three hours of wear to anything.

Apply, blot, apply. First layer for staining. Press a tissue to lips. Second layer for colour. The blotted layer is what survives a meal.

Line beyond. A lip liner one shade close to the lipstick, applied just outside the natural lip line, sharpens the edge and stops feathering through the day.

The grown-up red

The hydrating red —
that lets you wear red without committing to red

Red lipstick is the most photographed and the least worn product in most makeup bags. The barrier is not the colour — it is the commitment. A matte red announces itself. A satin red announces itself. A glossy red somehow announces itself too.

Bobbi Brown Crushed in Ruby is the version that does not. The formula is sheer, hydrating, more pigmented than a tinted balm but lighter than a traditional red lipstick. The result is a wash of colour that says you chose this, but quietly. The lipstick you wear when you want red to be a layer of yourself rather than a costume.

This is the red I wore to my first dinner where I was the only woman in red — and nobody asked about my lipstick because it did not need to be asked about. It just was. Which is the entire point of grown-up red.
